How Does Windshield Repair Work?
Windshields are something that most people never think about, unless theirs is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Understanding what is involved with windshield repair, can give you a better idea of what to expect if your windshield becomes chipped or cracked.
In this article, we offer an insider’s look on what really goes on behind the scenes of windshield repairs.
What is Windshield Repair?
Windshield repair involves using a special resin that is applied directly into the damaged area. This resin is injected into the damaged area using a specially designed tool. After the resin is injected into the chip or crack, it is cured. A professional windshield repair specialist then polishes this resin off to help restore clarity to the windshield.
A windshield is made up of two layers of glass with a layer of vinyl in between. After a crack occurs, it often spreads through the glass to this layer of plastic. Often windshield repair involves drilling a small through the top layer of the windshield glass to create a passageway for the resin to penetrate the break, creating a more effective repair.
When Does a Windshield Need to be Replaced?
Many times, a windshield can be repaired rather than replaced. Advances in recent technology make the results of repairs better than before, and while every crack is different, sometimes the repair is hardly noticeable. However, there are some cases where a windshield is just too far gone for repairs, and will need to be replaced. Here are a few things to look for, that can be signs that a windshield needs to be replaced.
- If the crack is longer than six inches
- If the crack extends to touch two separate sides of the window
- If the crack is directly obstructing the driver’s vision
- If the windshield has been seriously damaged
The best way to determine if your windshield needs to be replaced is to contact a windshield replacement company. At Delta Auto Glass, we would be happy to assess your windshield damage, and let you know if your window should be repaired or replaced.
